Scouts are very fast units that are weak in a fight but have very high military value. The main advantage of a scout is to send one to a tile to get the battle report so you can see how many of what type of military unit is on that tile. Although completely suicidal for the scout, even if the tile merely has a handful of cutthroats guarding it, the battle report allows the player to send in a force which will exploid the weakness of the occupying force. A stable is required to train these units and researching Riding can improve scouts. Barbarians have variations of these units called Vassals. Scouts become obsolete in the Renaissance Age.
