Research allows access to new technologies. A library, university or research facility (depending on how far you are in the game) is required to do research. The research is divided into ages. Bear in mind that once you go two ages ahead of the possible research option, it will be locked so it is recommended to research as much as you can before advancing too far. Also, only one technology can be researched at a time even if you have more than one research institution. However, more and/or higher leveled research institutions do decrease the time it takes to do research.
Researching can:
- Increase the rate of resource gain
- Give you access to new units and buildings
- Lower the trading time
- Improve specific units or all units
- Lower the building time
- Allow you to build on specific resource tiles
- Allow you to make (aditional) settlements
Often, one kind of research requires another to be researched before it can be research. The technologies unlocked are often linked, so for example a sawmill will grant you access to the research of springboards. This is known as a tech tree.
